General insurance is a jargon term given to insurance that generally covers physical assets. We advise you to shop around to get the best deal for covers.  However, by using a broker you will obtain an independent, experienced insurance professional, who can access many different companies, at approximately the same cost as if you walked in off the street and dealt directly with an insurance company.

House Insurance
This cover can be either for replacement costs or indemnity (discounted value) in the event of a fire or material damage claim and includes cover for earthquake and land slippage. You can opt for various excesses (the amount you pay before a claim is paid) which will impact on the annual premium.

Contents Insurance
This cover is to insure your personal belongings and the policies can vary widely. It is important to read the policy wording and also make sure you have adequate cover in the event of a major disaster.

Motor Vehicle Insurance
There are three main types of covers, full replacement, third party and third party fire and theft. Of all your covers, this is the most likely one you will claim on. It is important to know what you are covered for and the rules under which the insurance company expect you, the customer to abide by as well as what they will pay for. For example, young people with restricted licenses can void their insurances by carrying passengers or driving after the set times. Also DIC infringements can void any claim.

Boat Insurance
This covers the boat whilst in use and in travel or storage but it is again important to understand the requirements of the cover.

Farm and Business Insurance
This is a complex issue and will vary according to each business or farm. The covers available are extensive and not suited to direct purchases but require advice.
